AACN Advanced Critical Care is an official publication of the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses. It is a quarterly, peer-reviewed series of informative volumes of particular interest to experienced critical care, acute care, and progressive care clinicians at the bedside, advanced practice nurses, and clinical and academic educators. Each issue contains a topic-based symposium of 4 to 5 articles, and 4 to 5 individual articles that focus on topics of current clinical and professional interest to critical care, acute care, and progressive care clinicians. Articles contain concisely written information that can be put to immediate use in practice and be readily available for future reference. Continuing education units are available for selected articles in each volume. Both solicited and unsolicited articles are accepted for publication.

FOCUS OF ARTICLES
Manuscripts focus on in-depth, state-of-the-science, and evidenced-based content of relevance to experienced clinicians and advanced practice nurses working in critical care, acute care, or progressive care areas. The goal is for each journal issue to include articles related to pathophysiology, pharmacology, advanced assessment, disease management, innovative approaches to care, and professional role topics. Manuscripts also include an extensive discussion of how to integrate the article’s information into clinical practice. Where appropriate, manuscripts include discussion of differences and similarities for patients across the lifespan (neonate through geriatrics). Manuscripts are to be reference-based and reflect the most current and seminal references on the topic, including clinical research studies.

STYLE
Authors must prepare manuscripts according to the American Medical Association's Manual of Style (Iverson CI, Christianson S, Flanagin A, et al, eds. American Medical Association Manual of Style. 10th ed. New York: Oxford University Press; 2007).

MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
The following guidelines should be followed when preparing a manuscript for publication:

DATA-BASED ARTICLES
Data-based articles published in the journal must have been approved by an institutional review board. A statement indicating that approval was granted must be contained in the manuscript.

PERMISSIONS
If you wish to use a previously published table or figure/illustration, or an adapted version of a previously published table or figure/illustration, you must obtain written permission from the copyright holder, usually the original publisher (see permission form below). You must add a credit line to the end of the figure or table legend giving the original source of the material (see examples above). Permissions must accompany the submitted manuscript. If the copyright holder requests a fee or copies of the journal issue in which the material appears, you are financially responsible to pay the fee and provide the copies.

AUTHOR RESPONSIBILITY, FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE, AND COPYRIGHT TRANSFER

All authors must sign one of the 2 statements on the author responsibility, financial disclosure, and copyright transfer form (see below). Each person listed as an author should be thoroughly familiar with the substance of the final manuscript and be able to defend its conclusions. Persons who make subsidiary contributions may be listed in an “Acknowledgments” section at the end of the manuscript. Signed forms must be sent to the editor via e-mail or regular mail prior to, or with, submission of the manuscript.

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
Obtain written permission from all individuals named in an Acknowledgment, since readers may infer the individuals’ endorsement of data and conclusions. The corresponding author must certify that all persons who have made substantial contributions to the work reported in this manuscript (e.g., data collection, analysis, or writing or editing assistance) but who do not fulfill the authorship criteria are named in an Acknowledgment in the manuscript, and that all persons so named have provided written permission to be named, and that if an Acknowledgment section is not included, no other persons have made substantial contributions to the manuscript.

CONDITIONS OF SUBMISSION

RETAINED RIGHTS: Except for copyright, other proprietary rights related to the Work shall be retained by the authors. To reproduce any text, figures, tables, or illustrations from the Work in future works of their own, the authors must obtain written permission from the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN); such permission cannot be unreasonably withheld by AACN.
ORIGINALITY: Each author warrants that his or her submission to the Work is original and that he or she has full power to enter into this agreement. Neither this Work nor a similar work has been published nor shall be submitted for publication elsewhere while under consideration by the Journal.
AUTHORSHIP RESPONSIBILITY: Each author certifies that he or she has participated sufficiently in the intellectual content, the analysis of data, if applicable, and the writing of the Work to take public responsibility for it. Each has reviewed the final version of the Work, believes it represents valid work, and approves it for publication. Moreover, should the editors of the Journal request the data upon which the work is based, they shall produce it.
DISCLAIMER: Each author warrants that this Work contains no libelous or unlawful statements and does not infringe on the rights of others. If excerpts (tables or illustrations) from copyrighted works are included, a written release will be secured by the authors prior to submission, and credit to the original publication will be properly acknowledged. Each author warrants that he or she has obtained, prior to submission, written releases from patients whose names or photographs are submitted as part of the Work. Should the AACN request copies of such written releases, authors shall provide them to AACN in a timely manner. Each author also warrants that the Work contains no matter that is obscene, defamatory, in violation of any right of privacy, or otherwise contrary to the law. The author(s) shall jointly and severally indemnify, defend and hold harmless both Lippincott Williams & Wilkins and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses against loss or damages, including reasonable attorneys’ fees, arising from the breach of any warranty made in this document.

Compliance with NIH and Other Research Funding Agency Accessibility Requirements

A number of research funding agencies now require or request authors to submit the post-print (the article after peer review and acceptance but not the final published article) to a repository that is accessible online by all without charge. As a service to our authors, LWW will identify to the National Library of Medicine (NLM) articles that require deposit and will transmit the post-print of an article based on research funded in whole or in part by the National Institutes of Health, Wellcome Trust, Howard Hughes Medical Institute, or other funding agencies to PubMed Central. The revised Copyright Transfer Agreement provides the mechanism.

TRANSFER OF COPYRIGHT

AUTHORS’ OWN WORK: In consideration of the Journal’s publication of the Work, the authors hereby transfer, assign, and otherwise convey all copyright ownership worldwide, in all languages, and in all forms of media now or hereafter known, including electronic media such as CD-ROM, Internet, and Intranet, to the AACN. If the AACN should decide for any reason not to publish an author’s submission to the Work, they shall give prompt notice of their decision to the corresponding author, this agreement shall terminate, and neither the author nor they shall be under any further liability or obligation. The authors grant the AACN the rights to use their names and biographical data (including professional affiliation) in the Work and in its or the Journal’s promotion.
WORK MADE FOR HIRE: If this work has been commissioned by another person or organization, or if it has been written as part of the duties of an employee, an authorized representative of the commissioning organization or employer must also sign this form stating his or her title in the organization.
GOVERNMENT EMPLOYEES: If this submission to the Work has been written in the course of the author’s employment by the United States Government, check the “Government” box at the end of this form. A work prepared by a government employee as part of his or her official duties is called a “work of the U.S. Government” and is not subject to copyright. If it is not prepared as part of the employee’s official duties, it may be subject to copyright.
FINANCIAL DISCLOSURE: Each author certifies that he or she has no commercial associations (e.g., consultancies, stock ownership, equity interest, patent/licensing arrangements, etc.) that might pose a conflict of interests in connection with the submitted article, except as disclosed on a separate attachment. All funding sources supporting the Work and all institutional or corporate affiliations of the authors are acknowledged in a footnote in the Work.
INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD/ANIMAL CARE COMMITTEE APPROVAL: Each author certifies that his or her institution has approved the protocol for any investigation involving humans or animals and that all experimentation was conducted in conformity with ethical and humane principles of research.
